A statement circulated after a meeting held during Tangier’s seventh Twiza Festival announced the formation of the Union of North African Peoples, or UNAP, on the night of 23–24 July 2011.
According to the statement, the participants appointed Ferhat Mehenni as president for a single three-year term. It also named representatives connected with Libya, the Canary Islands, Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt in the organization’s proposed leadership and administration.
The announcement invited applications from communities not represented at the meeting and outlined plans for a further working session and the filing of the organization’s statutes.
This article records what the founding statement announced in 2011. It does not imply that the organization’s proposed arrangements or the positions listed at that time remain current.
