Halim Sammar, a young Amazigh woodworker from the Rif, won the 2012 award in the second edition of Morocco’s best handicraftsman competition.
Organized by the Ministry of Handicrafts in Marrakech and broadcast on 2M, the competition recognized his ability to turn wood into expressive forms drawn from his cultural surroundings.
Sammar’s winning work brought craftsmanship and personal interpretation together. Its interest lay in the way familiar cultural symbols could take on a new presence through the material, the design, and the maker’s hand.
Agraw congratulates Halim Sammar and his family. The photographs accompanying this article preserve the work and the occasion celebrated in the original report.
