A musician, a border, and lives placed in another person’s hands: The Passage turns a journey between countries into a question of conscience. Mohamed Amine Ben Amraoui’s feature, also known as Le Passage, is presented by Azir Productions as a 98-minute film currently in post-production.

When the journey becomes a choice

Set in 2015, the story centres on Farid, a wedding musician who has been pushed by circumstances into smuggling migrants. His situation changes when he becomes responsible for a pregnant woman from sub-Saharan Africa and a Syrian couple. According to the producer’s synopsis, their fate forces him to confront his own humanity.

The premise suggests a drama concerned with responsibility as much as movement. Farid’s earlier life in music and his present involvement in smuggling place two very different relationships with other people side by side: gathering people in celebration, and guiding them through uncertainty. That contrast is an invitation to discover the film, rather than a judgement on a work we have not yet seen.

A production between Morocco and Spain

Based in Tetouan, Azir Productions was founded in 2013. The independent company works in fiction and documentary, with an interest in the social and cultural realities of northern Morocco and in connections between Africa and Europe. On its company page, it describes The Passage as having been shot between Morocco and Spain.

Azir also co-produced Adios Carmen, a feature set in the Moroccan Rif. The Passage brings the company’s attention to lives shaped by borders into a different story, one whose central encounter is already defined by vulnerability and the possibility of a human response.

A film to follow

For Agraw, this is a project worth following: cinema rooted in northern Morocco, looking outward at the people and journeys that meet there. The producer’s film page currently lists The Passage as being in post-production and does not announce a release date.
